What’s in your cupboards?
04/07/2009 by admin.
When we get the hunger pangs or perhaps are looking for a snack through boredom, we go hunting through our cupboards. Now, if you don’t have a jar full of biscuits or other unhealthy snacks in the house, you will be more likely to opt for a more nutritious and healthy option. So bin the biscuits, fill your cupboards with fruit, nuts, carrots, oatcakes, rice cakes, spelt bread etc.

Curb those cravings!

Here are some tips for keeping those cravings at bay or in the event that a craving strikes, how to deal with it:
Don’t expect overnight results
16/01/2009 by admin.
Don’t expect to see immediate results from a new nutrition and exercise routine, otherwise you are setting yourself up for disappointment and will no doubt end up demotivated and falling out of your programme. It takes time for your body to become more efficient and start burning fat. It also takes time for your heart and lungs to improve efficiency.
If you follow a consistent training regime by raising your heart rate (getting out of breath) 3 times per week you could notice some changes in approximately 4 weeks. However, if you continue to exercise consistently, you will notice greater changes in the following month or two.
Don’t weigh yourself on a daily basis. The only difference you will notice by daily weighing is your water levels.
So chill out, weigh yourself once a week maximum. Take some measurements around your waist, one of your arms and one of your thighs and make a note. Often you notice changes in these areas before your weight.
Introduction to Tai Chi
03/01/2009 by admin.
For those of you attending boot camps, I am incorporating a small amount of tai chi at the end of each class, mainly to give you a few minutes to relax. I have been practising tai chi for some time and have found it very beneficial. I’ve provided answers to some of the questions I’ve received below:-
What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi is an ancient martial art which comprises co-ordinated body movements focusing on the development of internal energy (known as ‘chi’ or ‘qi’). Tai chi is quite unique in that there are a number of areas it has an influence over, such as on our health, self-healing, meditative state, stress levels, fitness and is also a form of self defence.
What is the aim of Tai Chi?
Its aim is to harmonise the mind, body and spirit, and promote both mental and physical well-being.
What are benefits of Tai Chi?
Tai Chi improves balance and posture and helps to reduce stress levels. It gently tones and strengthens muscles. It improves balance and posture and improves some medical conditions, such as musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive disorders.
90% of today’s children will be overweight or obese by 2050
02/01/2009 by admin.
That’s an interesting statistic and rather worrying. I see overweight children more and more often nowadays on our little Island. Part of the reason for this is that children are chauffeured door to door by their parents, they are less active and their diets contain more fat and are generally less healthy. Surely parents have an obligation to give their children a healthy start in life.
Action needs to be taken to stop obesity in children and adults together with the risks which come with that such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, having a stroke, cancers and type II diabetes. These are serious health issues and should not be taken lightly. Not to mention the low self confidence and self esteem that comes with being overweight and obese.
The UK has launched a new healthy living campaign to tackle Britain’s obesity levels. Interestingly, some of the manufacturers of products which contribute to obesity levels are backing the campaign.
So where do you start? I would suggest leave the car at home occasionally, walk or cycle to the shops. If you have to take your car, park it at the furthest point from where you are going. If you don’t normally exercise, then start today with a 10 minute walk to the point of being slightly out of breath, add a minute on to your walk time every day.
When you go shopping this week, don’t put the biscuits in your trolley, instead put some fruit. If you have a sweet tooth, then put dates and figs in the trolley.
If you are unsure whether you should undertake exercise, please check with your GP first.
