Delhi Update

Sorry for the lack of communication over the last few days.  I’ve been laid low with some bug.  Taking antibiotics and feeling better.

Road race didn’t quite go to plan.  The course was very technical, lots of roundabouts and corners - this means the chance of crashes is more likely and two happened in front of me, both on the same corner.  I had to manoeuvre my way around the rider just into a corner on lap two, not quite sure how I managed not to crash myself.  Having lost touch with the peleton I had to work hard to get back on, the same happened on lap four only this time I couldn’t quite get back in touch.  Meant I had to do four laps on my won - the hardest thing I’ve ever done in that heat.

There was a small Guernsey contingent on one of the corners giving me a good cheer who kept me going to 38th place.  Lots of riders were pulled out of the race.

I stayed to watch the guys race and they all did great.  I am so proud of James who got 20th place - a superb performance from my little rider in such a quality field.

Delhi Update

Feeling a bit rough today.  Hopefully nothing too serious.

Seen some big names.  The Games Village is bustling.

Was great to see Kylie R do a PB in the 100m last night.

Delhi Update

It’s good here now that people are competing.  Some of the Guernsey competitors have done really well.

Today I was out on the highway training.  I towed a Kenyan rider for a couple of laps.  For those not into cycling that means that she rode behind me, benefitting from my speed and sheltering.  You can save up to 30% energy by doing that.

Hope to go and see the athletics tonight.  Kylie R and Lee M will be competing.

Only 4 days now until we race!  You really lose track of days here.

Days at Delhi

Well, we’ve been here nearly a week now.  Body still needing to adjust to the heat with my power down by 20-30 watts.  This was to be expected.  Hopefully it will improve in the next week.

Not looking forward to the time trial in that hot aero lid.  A sure fire way to over heat.

Did some intervals on my turbo trainer yesterday in the sun, I was bright red by the end of that.  Took a few hours to cool down properly.

Opening Ceremony was bright and loud.   It was a late night so an easy ride today with intervals to come tomorrow.

Some of the Guernsey competitors start competiting today - swimming, squash, tennis and table tennis.  We have another 6 days before we compete.  It’s a fine balance between acclimatising and tapering so that I am fresh for the race.

Turning up the Heat

Today I went back out on the highway.  I did a steady hour followed by some more intense efforts on my time trial bike.  I found trying to hold intense efforts tough in the heat and my body clearly didn’t like it as I threw up twice.  This was definitely the toughest session I’ve done since I arrived in India.  I’ve felt fine since but feel I need more of the same if my body is going to adjust to the conditions and be ready for my races.

The Indians are very friendly and so polite.  It’s also great meeting people from different countries.

Another Day Another 5000 Rupees

Had a nice breeze on my back whilst I did my outdoor turbo session today.  Usually do these indoors but wanted to keep working on acclimation.

Easy day so should feel good tomorrow for tougher session out on the armed guard highway.

Commonwealth Games Update

Just back from dinner in the Athletes’ Village Restaurant where there is a wide selection of food from Western, Indian, African, Asian and Italian - plenty for everyone.

We had our welcome selection today where they put out flag up.  They clearly had put a lot of work into preparing with dancing and music.

We have trained out on our allocated 10 mile loop of road.  We load up onto a bus with the bikes and have a 20 minute journey out there.  We have up to 3 hrs to train.  I am breaking myself in gently with a 1.5 hr ride yesterday and 1 hr 50 today with intervals.  It’s very hot but I seem to be hydrating well so far.

The biggest star I have seen so far is swimmer, Rebecca Addlington.  Mark Cavendish is coming out here so that’s really exciting.

Using SPF 50 so might take a while to notice a tan!

Winning is Believing or is it Believing is Winning?

To be a winner you got to believe you can win.  My rider, Kerin, had a great win in his rookie year of cycle racing in division 2.  He’s been looking for that win for a few races now.   More great performances to come from him I am sure of that.

30 hrs of Non-Stop Cycling

Many congratulations to Nick Affleck for completing his epic challenge of cycling 30 hrs around Guernsey non-stop to raise funds for Les Bourgs Hospice.  Nick covered 376 miles during his ride.  That is the equivalent of more than 16 times around the Island.
