Barefoot Running Shoes
31/08/2011 by admin.
‘Barefoot running shoes’ might sound like a contradiction in terms. The idea behind them is that they embrace the feeling and benefits of walking and running barefoot. Some people that start off running with these shoes end up running barefoot.
The foot is one of the most complicated areas on the human body comprising 26 bones and 100 muscles. If something is wrong at foot level, it is going to impact the rest of our bodies as we will over compensate, often without even realising. This will result in misalignment, stresses on joints and muscles and injury.
Wearing shoes has changed the natural shape of our feet. To an extreme those women (and men) that wear uncomfortably fitting shoes suffer in later life with bunions and other feet problems. Frequent wearing of high heels causes tight calf muscles and Achilles tendon problems.
People that walk/run barefoot or wear these barefoot shoes have reported less injuries, improved balance, greater level of agility and improved shape of the foot, ie toes less squashed and deformed. It is also suggested that they reduce the likelihood of varicose veins due to better circulation.
Using these shoes means that our running style will change in that we will be running more on our forefoot than our heels. It is therefore important to gradually get used to the shoes. I’d suggest start with walking around in them prior to running and gradually build your running distance.
I shall be reporting more on my experiences with my barefoot running shoes over coming months.

A new testimonial:-
“I have been training with Ann for a number of months. I have found her approach excellent and work out routines fitted with my requirements perfectly. I would strongly recommend using Ann whether you are new to keeping fit or are looking for that extra to move you onto a new level.”

Exercise reported to combat neuroinflammation
30/08/2011 by admin.
Exercise has been shown to reduce inflammatory processes in the brain. Stress, bacterial infections, advanced age and genetic mutations and other toxic stimuli cause neuroinflammation in the brain. Recent studies have investigated how exercise can control inflammatory responses within the central nervous system.
Recent findings reported that exercise can positively aid healthy ageing and offer some protection against diseases linked to the brain such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis.
The question is whether people will take this on board as a trigger to exercise or have the ‘it won’t happen to me approach’.
Time to Detox
29/08/2011 by admin.
I spent a fair bit of time Saturday morning in the Health Food Store preparing for a detox. One of my finds was Lifestyle Detox Herbal Tea containing dandelion, milk thistle and violet.
- Dandelion is more than just a weed; it offers many health benefits such as increased immunity and reduction in inflammation. Dandelion contains many vitamins and minerals including Vitamins A, C, K and B-Complex plus minerals iron, magnesium and potassium. It also stimulates the liver and kidneys to filter out toxins from the blood.
- Milk Thistle has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been reported to repair damaged liver cells and protect new cells from toxins.
- The Violet flower and leaves have been reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties as well as an antiseptic. This beautiful flower has been reported to help relieve acne, asthma, eczema, headaches, lymphatic congestion, psoriasis and urinary tract infections amongst other health issues.
Oh, and the tea tastes ok too.
Food Intolerance Update
29/08/2011 by admin.
Interestingly since my post last week, I have eaten a little more dairy (in the form of cheese) and I believe this is causing a reaction including a raised heart rate and fatigue. I will be surprised if dairy is not still on my intolerance results when I get them back.

One of my lovely clients gave me some blackberries the other day and referred to an interesting article in the daily mail explaining just how they can benefit health and well being by improving bone health. They are reported to be beneficial for digestive health, eye protection, healing and cell boosting. Find out more here.

More bulking up advice
27/08/2011 by admin.
Deciding on the correct protein supplement is important when you are looking to bulk up. Select a protein supplement containing high levels of branch chain amino acids which include isoleucine, leucine and valine. These are metabolised in the muscle as opposed to the liver. When the body is under stress, such as through training, it can enter into a catabolic state which means that muscle tissue is broken down. By supplementing with these branch chain amino acids it is possible to reduce protein breakdown within the muscle and in turn allow the body to benefit more fully from the training undertaken.
