Commonwealth Games Update
30/09/2010 by admin.
Just back from dinner in the Athletes’ Village Restaurant where there is a wide selection of food from Western, Indian, African, Asian and Italian - plenty for everyone.
We had our welcome selection today where they put out flag up. They clearly had put a lot of work into preparing with dancing and music.
We have trained out on our allocated 10 mile loop of road. We load up onto a bus with the bikes and have a 20 minute journey out there. We have up to 3 hrs to train. I am breaking myself in gently with a 1.5 hr ride yesterday and 1 hr 50 today with intervals. It’s very hot but I seem to be hydrating well so far.
The biggest star I have seen so far is swimmer, Rebecca Addlington. Mark Cavendish is coming out here so that’s really exciting.
Using SPF 50 so might take a while to notice a tan!

Boot Camp

Yesterday was my last boot camp for 3 weeks. This was followed by a coffee morning hosted by our very own “Cappucino Lady” in aid of MacMillan. She was in her element with cafetieres going full on. £260 was raised so well done to Ali and thanks for the donations.

Don’t forget Saturday boot camp continues during my absence so keep a check on my blog for details.
End of Racing Season
26/09/2010 by admin.
Today was the last race on the GVC calendar, the dreaded Val des Terres Hill Climb. Apart from the frustration of my rear wheel pulling over and rubbing on my brake, comparable to the guys, I did a pretty good ride. Highlight of the day was Nick Depres winning the event. Nick holds both the open and closed road records from before my time with the GVC. I think his win was a surprise to most of us after a number of years away from the sport, just shows what a class act he is.
Yesterday James McLaughlin stormed the 5mTT to win in 10:50 in tough conditions. I’ve got stronger with each race of late so perhaps things will click into place at the right moment.

Food Intolerance Update 5
23/09/2010 by admin.
I had my long awaited consultation with the lab nutritionist yesterday. As yeast is very high on my intolerance list, she sees this as a key issue. The result of a yeast intolerance is damage to the gut wall, which can result in toxins in the body causing a reduction in energy levels. This can also have an effect on mental health.
Therefore, the key focus has to be reducing my intolerance to yeast by avoiding it as much as possible. I’ve made a good start with this and really just need to continue what I have been doing. The nutritionist was less concerned at this point in time with the foods I am less intolerant too. If I don’t crack the issue with the yeast, it is likely that the other intolerances won’t go away.
Some of the foods I have to avoid to solve the yeast intolerance are bread, vinegar, Marmite, mushrooms, vegetarian quorn products, most alcohol and soy sauce. I also need to minimise my sugar intake. A large part of an athlete’s diet is sugar because we consume drinks and food containing sugar during training sessions/racing and just after training and racing. This is because our bodies need a quick and easily absorbable supply of energy which sugary foods supply.
Personal Bests
23/09/2010 by admin.
This has been a week of cycling personal bests for my clients. Rocket Robbie put in a brilliant 5 mile time trial on Tuesday night to record a new PB and Sharon was up early this morning to record a personal best time up the Val des Terres.
Millet Magic

One of the foods I have come across through managing my food intolerance is millet. Millet is seed, although it is called a grain, which has plenty of vitamins and minerals. Some key nutrients include calcium, magnesium, B vitamins, manganese and phosphorus. It also contains antioxidants and fibre.Being gluten free is a key benefit to millet but others include:
- Lowers cholesterol
- Plays a part in fat metabolism
- As part of a healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of Type II Diabetes
- Doesn’t feed pathogenic yeast (Candida)
- Helps to reduce the affects of migraines
- Provides serotonin which helps with sleep as well as moderates moods and emotion
- Helps to hydrate the colon which in turn keeps us regular.
Food Intolerance - Blog Update 4

France was not the easiest place to go with my food intolerances, partly due to understanding the menu (despite having my phrase book). However, I kept my selections as simple as possible usually salad and some protein plus potatos where possible. They put dressings on the salads which I would usually avoid but decided not to stress about a small amount. Meals were topped up by fruit and some other supplies I took with me, particularly when I didn’t have carbohydrates with my main meals.
I have ordered a blood glucose monitoring system but currently feel that my blood sugar levels are more under control. However, if I feel a dip, it will give me the opportunity to confirm that this is one of the problems I’ve been suffering.
