Chinese Restaurant Syndrome

Monosodium glutamate, better known as “MSG”, is a flavour enhancer which makes cheap food taste good.  It is contained in many foods including fast foods such as Chinese, processed foods and some restaurant food.  One problem of MSG is that it makes you want more of the food you are eating.  It also makes you feel hungry soon after eating and can therefore contribute to obesity and type II diabetes.Reports indicate that MSG can lead to severe symptoms in children including autism or ‘Attention Deficit Disorder’.MSG has been reported to affect health.  Some of the symptoms reported include:

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Heart palpitations

  • Chest pain

  • Flushes

  • Sweats

  • Weakness

  • Nausea

  • Burning sensation, numbness or tingling around the mouth area

The best way to avoid MSG is to steer clear of take-out food and processed food.  MSG is an addictive ‘E621’ check packaged foods for this number.  Eat food in its most natural state.
