Saturday’s Boot Camp

Tonight’s Boot Camp

Boot camp will never be the same…..our new recruits Chris and Andy fitted in just perfectly. Our rounders is coming along nicely too!

Are you getting enough sun?

Unlike other vitamins, we do not need to obtain Vitamin D from the food that we eat, instead we obtain it from sunlight.  It is then stored in our bodies for future use throughout the year.  However, a high portion of the population has Vitamin D deficiency.  Vitamin D is needed for good health and for strong bones.  Research also suggests that Vitamin D plays a role in prevention of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Darker skinned people need more sun to get the same amount of Vitamin D than those with fair skin.  Between two and three 20 – 30 min segments of exposure to sunlight per week during spring and summer should be sufficient to achieve the required levels of Vitamin D due to the body’s ability to store it.  Care must be taken to avoid burning though.

Some foods do contain Vitamin D but the majority is obtained from the sun.  Foods containing Vitamin D include:

  • Fortified foods such as margarine and cereals.
  • Egg yolk.
  • Cheese, milk and butter
  • Mushrooms.
  • Oily fish
  • Liver
