Visceral Fat…explained

My body composition scales are proving a useful tool, not just in terms of advising of body fat but also the added scoring for visceral fat.  Visceral fat is the fat that surrounds the internal organs in the abdominal cavity.  A high level of visceral fat is considered unhealthy and is a contributory factor to high blood pressure, heart disease, a stroke and type II diabetes.

If you are inactive, smoke, drink and have an unhealthy diet you are more likely to have a higher level of visceral fat than those that live a more active and healthy lifestyle.

The bad news is that visceral fat is more difficult to lose than other body fat because it is more deeply embedded in the body’s tissues. However, with effort, it can be lowered.

Earlier this week we saw an improvement in the visceral fat of one of my clients from the unhealthy to healthy range.  This is someone that has committed to a healthier lifestyle and is doing a good amount of exercise which goes to show that it is worth making the effort and persevering with a healthy lifestyle.
