Do you need to take multi-vitamins?

The first rule of vitamins is that you should be able to get all you need from your diet if your diet is varied and healthy.  However, in reality, many people do not have a healthy, balanced diet and therefore taking a multi-vitamin might be a good option.

Some vitamins are water soluble and others are fat soluble.  This means that you should consume either water or some fat with your vitamins.  Now, when I say ‘fat’, I am not talking about cakes and chocolate but rather healthy fats - known as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in the likes of nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocado and fish for example.  This is why it is suggested that you take your multi-vit after a meal.

Smoking, stress, illness, tiredness and alcohol can all impact your body’s balance of vitamins and minerals.

If you do take vitamins, don’t consume coffee or tea within an hour of taking them as the caffeine can interfere with absorption.
