Saturday’s Boot Camp

Saturday’s boot camp will be at Bordeaux - meeting at 10 am.

Are you getting enough fibre?

We need fibre to help with the digestion process and to keep our colons healthy and avoid constipation.

We don’t tend to include sufficient fibre in our diets, although it’s very easy to add fibre.  There is a large amount of varying advice on how much fibre we should consume which ranges from 20-30g per day.  If you do increase your fibre intake also increase your water intake.  Consult your GP or a nutritionist for further advice.

The foods containing the highest quantities of fibre include legumes such as peas and beans, dried fruit such as apricots, figs and dates.  Other fruits including bananas, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, plums, apples, pears, blackberries and kiwi.  Vegetables including spinach, beet greens, kale, broccoli, beet root, sweet corn, baked potato (including the skin) sprouts and carrots.  As I said, it’s easy to include in your diet.

Whole wheat foods, oats, barley, rye, buckwheat and cornmeal.

Nuts can also be high in fibre including Brazil nuts, almonds, peanuts and walnuts.

You should start the day with foods high in fibre such as wholemeal toast or cereal containing at least 6g of fibre per 100g and sprinkle over some grape nuts for that little bit extra.
