How to balance your daily diet

You should not be considering certain foods as good or certain foods as bad but should take into consideration your ‘overall balance’ of food choices as healthy or unhealthy.  Take a moment now to consider whether your overall diet is healthy or unhealthy.  Eating well can be quite simple.  Here are some guidelines which you can follow:-

  • Consume 5 or more servings of fruit/vegetables each day (try to ensure a variety of colour)
  • Consume 3 servings of dairy foods per day
  • All meals should be based on starchy foods and preferrably wholegrain.
  • Avoid refined/processed foods as much as possible, in particular foods with high fat or high sugar content.  Be careful as some foods are labelled as low fat but are in fact high in sugar.  You should read labels carefully.
  • Reduce your protein meat intake - as a general rule we in the western world consume too much meat.  Replace some meats with alternative proteins such as beans, lentils and peas.
  • Consume red meat no more than once per week - this includes minced beef, steak, lamb, roast beef, duck, goose and pork.
