Vitamin K

Vitamin K is not a vitamin that is frequently mentioned despite having many nutritional benefits.  Vitamin K is a key component required for blood clotting as in sealing the wound when we get a cut.   It also helps to ensure that blood does not clot too thickly leading to heart disease.

It helps to combat calcification of blood vessels and heart valves which can lead to cardiovascular disease.  Insufficient intake of Vitamin K can lead to hardening of the arteries.  Vitamin K is also crucial for bone health and protects against the risk of fracture.

Others roles of Vitamin K include playing a role in inflammatory response, protection against liver and pancreatic cancer, helping to protect nerve cells against oxidative damage and to support the brain and nervous system structure.

Vitamin K is found in dark green vegetables such as broccoli or spinach, asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower, ripe tomato, romaine lettuce and thyme.

Breakfast - the most important….

….meal of the day!

How many times have you heard that?  Do you still ignore it?

If you fail to eat breakfast, your metabolism will not be on full throttle and will result in you eating an extra 100 kcals per day.

If breakfast is a struggle, opt for fruit and natural yoghurt or make up a smoothie containing 200g red berries and 125ml of milk.

Saturday’s Boot Camp

Saturday’s boot camp will be held on Lihou Island headland starting at 10 am.

England - Should They Hang Their Heads in Shame?

We all have our views on yesterday’s football match.  Personally, I am of the view that the players are overpaid and many of them less interested in football than they are in the lifestyle and stardom it brings.   They were outclassed by the Germans, there is no doubt about it.  Our defenders could not match the pace of the opposition and their marking was appauling.

There is a Lampard disallowed goal which was totally ridiculous.  You didn’t need to be level with the goal line to see that the ball had crossed the line.

I gather they didn’t like the fact they were only allowed one beer the night before a game.  We are talking about international athletes in the biggest sporting tournament in the World, they shouldn’t want a beer.  In my view, Capello should stay, those players need discipline and continuity.   It’s always easy to blame the manager but the players need to take some responsibililty for the poor performance throughout the tournament.

I know what it takes to reach high levels in the sport of cycling, I see pictures of Lance Armstrong climbing snow covered mountains in the winter.  Cycling is a sport where only the very best will earn well but requires hours and hours of investment.  Training, even to be a good club cyclist, is tough and intense.

Perhaps now we should turn our interests to the Tour de France and support Olympic Gold Medalist, Bradley Wiggins, in his quest for a podium placing.   Go Andrew Murray in Wimbledon.

Is it about time to change our national sport to something we are good at?

When to eat your ‘apple a day’

Top Tip….If you eat an apple 15 minutes prior to a meal you are more likely to eat less during the meal.  This could save you somewhere near 150 kcal per day.

Tuesday’s boot camp

Tuesday’s boot camp will be held at Saumarez Park at 6.45 pm, meeting in the rear car park.  As a reward for the efforts put in my participants today, we’ll be trying out some new games.

Today’s Boot Camp

Well done to today’s boot camp participants who battled the hot weather to run between 5km and 7 km.  The fitness levels have improved massively over recent months as well as the motivation from each participant to reach a new level.

Keep working on your running in between these run specific sessions.

Skipping is not just for children

One sure fire way to burn calories is to skip.  12 minutes of skipping will burn in the region of 200 kcals.  Not only this but due to the intensity of skipping, your body will continue to burn calories once you have stopped.

Exercise First Thing

Exercising early morning is a sure fire way to set your metabolism off for the day.  Stick in there 3 sets of 30 seconds of intense exercise such as squat thrusts, running thrusts or burpees and you will be firing on all cylinders.

Don’t eat on the move

We’ve all done it.  Eating on the move leads to us eating up to three times as much food.  Make the time to sit down to your meal and remove all distractions such as television, newspapers and work.  Give yourself an opportunity to taste your food. Conscious eating leads to us consuming less calories overall.
