Bring on the Bean

Beans and lentils offer numerous health benefits, including lowering cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of some cancers and lowering the risk of heart disease if consumed on a regular basis.  They are great for regulating blood sugar levels due to their soluble fibre.  This is also great news for those seeking to lose weight as the fibre content results in a feeling of being full.

If you are looking for a meat alternative and a food low in saturated fat then beans are a great option.  They provide about 15 grams of protein per cup.  However, the strongest bean of all, soybean, contains a massive 29 grams per cup.  By way of comparison approximately ¼ cup of cooked beans or lentils is the equivalent to 1oz of meat.

Be careful though there are some you should eat in moderation, baked beans tend to be high in salt and sugar and refried beans are high in saturated fat.
