Banana business

Bananas are perfect for after an exercise session.  This is when your body is ready to process carbohydrates and prefers something that is going to get into your system fast.  Bananas are a sugary fruit so serve the purpose well.

Not only this but they have numerous health benefits including reducing the risk of high blood pressure, reduce heart burn due to their antacid effect, they can also help eradicate the bacteria in your stomach that causes ulcers.  Eating bananas can aid calcium absorption and therefore contribute to healthy bones.

They help recovery from both diarrhea and constipation.  They also contain iron so can can help against anaemia.

Glory

Some more inspiration for you just in case you are struggling with your New Year Resolutions:

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall

Tuesday’s boot camp

We are back to Vale Douzaine at 7.45 pm for Tuesday’s boot camp.

Green tea for healthy teeth

Green tea has an abundance of health benefits.  Much of the reason for this is that it is rich in catechin polyphenols, in particular a powerful anti-oxidant called epigallocatechin gallate (also known as EGCG).

EGCG inhibits the growth of cancer cells and lowers cholesterol levels.  It also reduces the formation of abnormal blood clots, therefore reducing the risk of thrombosis; the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.

There are many other benefits from drinking green tea, including reducing the risk of cancer, increasing immunity to fight disease, fighting infection, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease.  Green tea can even help to prevent tooth decay.

Butternut Squash - the fruity one with lots of umph!

Butternut Squash is a member of the “Gourd” family which also encompasses cucumber, melon and pumpkin.  Although most of us think of it as a vegetable, it’s actually a fruit because it has seeds.  Hey ho, you learn something everyday.

Low in fat and packed with fibre, it will help your digestive system.  Filled with antioxidants and B6, it’s great for your immunity.  The Butternut Squash also supports bone health due to its potassium content.

The orange colour means it is full of carotenoids which have so many health benefits, including protection against heart disease, age related macular degeneration (which destroys central vision) and breast cancer.

Wow, what a power food!!!

’twas the month after Christmas…

I was sent this poem today and thought it was rather appropriate.  Thanks Claire.

Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house,
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I’d nibbled, the chocolate I’d taste
At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.
When I got on the scales
there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber),

I‘d remember the marvellous meals I’d prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,
The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese
And the way I’d never said, “No thank you, pleas.”
As I dressed myself in my husband’s old shirt
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt…
I said to myself, as I only can,
“You can’t spend a Summer, disguised as a man!”

So, away with the last of the sour cream dip.
Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip.
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
Till all the additional ounces have vanished.
I won’t have a cookie, not even a lick.
I’ll want only to chew on a long celery stick.
I won’t have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie.
I’ll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I’m hungry, I’m lonesome, and life is a bore…
But isn’t that what January is for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to all, and to all a good diet.

Saturday’s Boot Camp

Let’s try again for the Reservoir for Saturday’s boot camp to be held at 10 am.

Tuesday’s boot camp - cancelled

Due to advice from the police not to go out unless necessary, tonight’s boot camp is cancelled.  Let’s hope we get some warmer weather soon.

Diabetes Type II - Added Complications

Diabetes is a serious condition which can impact the sufferor’s health in many ways.

If your blood glucose levels are higher than normal over a long period of time, your blood vessels can become damaged and result in complications such as:-

  • Kidney damage which can develop into kidney failure.
  • Atheroma (aka ‘furring or hardening of the arteries’). This can result in other health problems eg heart attacks, angina, stroke and poor circulation.
  • Foot problems as a result of poor circulation and nerve damage
  • Eye problems which can result in impaired vision.
  • Nerve damage.
  • Impotence.

The risk of developing these complications is reduced if other ‘risk factors’ are dealt with such as high blood pressure, stress, alcohol consumption and smoking.  The affect of Diabetes on each individual varies and can depend on the length of time you have had the disease and the severity of the disease, ie how far from normal your blood sugar levels are.
