Pineapple Protection
29/01/2010 by admin.
Pineapple contains Vitamin C to protect against damaging free radicals which attack and damage our body’s healthy cells. Vitamin C also helps fight against infections and the likes of the common cold.
Other key ingredients of the pineapple are Manganese and Thiamine (Vitamin B1) which strengthen our antioxidant defences, as well as assist with energy production. Eating pineapple and other fruit each day helps to protection against Age Related Macular Degeneration. This is the main cause of loss of vision amongst older adults.
The stem and core fruit of a pineapple contain Bromelain which is a complex mixture of substances which is produced as a supplement. Bromelain aids digestion in the intestinal tract as well as reduces inflammation. It can reduce excessive clotting of the blood, as well as reduce some types of tumour growth when taken as a supplement.
Boot Camp Beats the Bike
28/01/2010 by admin.
Chris sent me a message after wearing her heart rate monitor at boot camp last Saturday. She was surprised with the recordings!
Her heart rate peaked at 167 bpm and 529 cals. Chris compared this to a cycle session which had a peak heart rate of 159 bpm and burned 523 cals. So boot camp really does get the heart rate up and calories burning. Your body will continue to burn calories following the session. Also, you will get a great muscle workout to help firm up your butt and thighs as well as core and upper body.

Basmati - “Queen of Scents”
26/01/2010 by admin.
Basmati Rice (“Queen of Scents”) is a long-grain, non-glutinous rice. It is gentle on the digestive system and is ‘saatvic’ or pure. Basmati rice balances the physiology and builds body tissue.
Basmati rice is best used for biryani, pilafs or as a side order. It has a lighter, fluffier texture than other rice and is available in both white and brown versions. Brown Basmati rice contains about 20% more fibre than other brown rice.
Before you cook basmati rice, soak it in a bowl of cool water and stir frequently. Replace the water four or five times until it no longer has a milky appearance.
Switch rice and cous cous for bulgur
25/01/2010 by admin.
Bulgur has a mildly nutty flavour and is usually available in four grain sizes: fine, medium, coarse, and whole grains. The different sizes are used for different purposes ranging from breakfast cereals to desserts, vegetarian burgers, casseroles, stews, soups and salads.
Bulgur contains little fat and is a good source of protein. It contains B vitamins, iron and magnesium. Approx 100g of unprepared bulgur contains an impressive 8 grams of fibre.
It is a good alternative for rice and couscous as it contains more fibre and has a lower glycaemic index than these options.
This week

Thanks to all your kind birthday messages.
It’s been a rather manic week or two with lots happening, hence I’ve been rather quiet so apologies for that. I have taken on some interesting cycle coaching work so look forward to seeing those riders blossom over the coming months. The majority of the new riders I have taken on are not racing cyclists but have endurance challenges ahead of them such as the Marmotte and Etape Caledonia.
Friday involved an interesting personal training session as it was on a boat! One of the challenges for this was the lack of space and at times lack of head height. Not to mention that I don’t cope well with even the slighest of movement on a boat.
Today’s boot camp was rather lively and had a great buzz to it. A special mention to Becci, who’s birthday it was on Wednesday.
Have a fab weekend.
