Knock back the animal protein
17/10/2009 by admin.
If you are looking to improve your general wellbeing and lose some weight there are some foods you should avoid or at least seriously cut down on. Animal protein is one food that we tend to consume too much of. In nearly every meal some of you will be consuming animal protein in the form of cheese, eggs, milk, bacon, sausages, steak or other meat products.
The problem with consuming so much animal protein is that it is often high in saturated fat and cholesterol. This puts you at higher risk of getting high blood pressure, a stroke or heart disease. If you don’t exercise then you are increasing your risk even more.
So, consider seriously your intake of animal protein. Substitute some of your animal protein for beans, lentils, soy based products, quorn and tofu. Only eat red meat once per week and ensure that it is of good quality. Ensure you get some good quality fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) as they help to counteract the bad cholesterol contained in saturated fat. These can be found in oily fish, nuts, seeds, olive oil, canola oil and avocados.

Should you be avoiding the “nightshade family of vegetables”
14/10/2009 by admin.
The nightshade family of vegetables provide a number of health benefits due to the fact they are rich in vitamins and minerals. However, for some people, the nightshade vegetables tend to aggravate certain conditions due to their solanine content.
Some conditions associated with the nightshade family include arthritis, heartburn, rheumatoid arthritis, acne and gastroesophageal reflux disease. If you suffer from any of these conditions, it could be worth eliminating these vegetables from your diet for at least 12 weeks, any less and you might not notice any improvement in your condition.
The nightshade family comprises:
-
tomatoes
-
potatoes (sweet potatoes can be eaten)
-
eggplant
-
sweet and hot peppers (this includes cayenne pepper, paprika and
Tabasco sauce)
-
tomatillos and tamarillos
-
ground cherries
-
pepinos and pimentos
-
garden huckleberry and naranjillas
Guidelines suggest that we should avoid consuming flowers, leaves and stems of members of the nightshade family. We should also eat fully ripened fruits.
If you don’t want to give up potatoes then ensure you cut out any green parts and any eyes.
Foods for your skin

Here are some diet tips for looking after your skin:-
-
Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties. It works as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent and will help to fight off bacteria and free radicals. Free radicals result in the deterioration of collagen and elastin in the skin and therefore results in the ageing effect. You can count green tea as part of your daily water intake.
-
Cottage cheese is a useful protein and great for snacking on. It contains calcium essential for healthy bones and also contains selenium. Selenium is also found in brazil nuts and liver. Selenium improves the elasticity of skin and helps to fight skin infection and acne. It helps to fight those nasty free radicals in the body. Along with all the other benefits selenium improves the hair and nails so should form part of our daily diet.

People often avoid them because we hear that they contain fat but avocados have many nutritional benefits. Firstly they are rich in B-complex vitamins and essential oils and help to soothe irritates or blotchy skin. They also act as an anti-inflammatory agent. The fat contained in avocados is the healthy fat required by our bodies. Avocados go great in a salad, mixed with banana or try them with yoghurt and berries.

Good skin health
12/10/2009 by admin.
There’s no doubt that having good skin makes us more confident. Good skin is achieved from good diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and regular exercise. Our skin can be damaged by pollution, smoking, lack of sleep, alcohol and bad diet.
Vitamins A and E are particularly good for the skin and vitamins B and C help to prevent skin conditions.
Stress can contribute to skin trouble. However, regular exercise can help in stress reduction. Another benefit of exercise is that it flushes toxins out of your system. Ensure you shower or bath soon after exercising; otherwise the toxins that you have just flushed out remain on your skin and can be detrimental to good skin health.
Job satisfaction

When somebody exceeds their own expectations personal training can be the most rewarding job. One of my clients ran without stopping to walk for 5 minutes tonight. She was so delighted with her achievement. We had our first session only 2 weeks ago, at that point my client was unsure that she would be able to do a personal training session. Now we are considering goals such as running the Race for Life.
One of the key reasons that my client is doing so well is her dedication between sessions with me. She continues to run and eat sensibly but also ensures that she has some days off to allow her body to adjust to the new exercise regime and avoid risk of injury.
