Isoflavones…find out about them here

I promised you some information on isoflavones so here we go….

Isoflavones are natural plant hormones, taken mainly from soya beans or red clover.  They have a chemical structure similar to that of our own estrogen.  Isoflavones occur in relatively high concentrations in soy products and have potential anti-cancer effects, in particular breast and prostate cancer.

Vegetarians who consume soy products and tofu have a lower risk of cancer.Isoflavones have been known to ease menopausal symptoms as well as improve bone health.  They are reported to have anti-oxidant properties and help to combat heart disease.

Soya Nuts - a healthy option

Soya nuts provide a high protein snack which is also high in fibre.  These little gems help to maintain blood sugar balance.  They are also a great source of B-vitamins, iron and zinc and are high antioxidants.  Other benefits of soya nuts are:

  • They are a complete protein which is particularly good for vegetarians.

  • They are a good source of phytochemicals such as isoflavones.  More on these later in the week.

  • They help to lower “bad” cholesterol.

  • They have are low in bad (saturated) fat but provide a good level of the healthy fats, in particular polyunsaturated fats.

Quinoa, quality vegetarian food

Quinoa is a seed which is related to the spinach family, although it appears and tastes like a grain when cooked.  It is higher in iron, calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, manganese and zinc than barley, wheat or corn.

It is high in fibre and contains all 9 essential amino acids, which are required by the body as building blocks for muscles.

It is therefore a superb substitute for meat.  The protein quality and quantity in quinoa seed is often reported to be better than the more common cereal grains.

How to tone your butt

This is always a popular one.  I often get ask “how can I tone my behind?”.

Here are some ways of getting firm butt cheeks.

Lunges - stand with feet hip width apart, take a breath in and step forward with your right foot, as you do so, lower your hips so that your right knee is at at 45 -90 degree angle (depending on your fitness level) and your left foot is behind you with a bent knee.   The bigger the angle the harder the exercise.  Exhale and push back to the original position, then do the same with the other leg forward.

Climb steps/stairs - place your whole foot on the stair and press down firmly through your heal before taking the next step.

Kickbacks - place your hands and knees on a mat, kick your right leg back and up in a bent position , as you do this tense your buttocks, hold for a few seconds and release.  Do the same with the left leg.
