Can the coffee

One question I frequently get asked is “is coffee really that bad for you?”.

The problem with coffee is that  it is a stimulant which effects the heart and central nervous system.  People with high blood pressure are often advised not to drink caffeinated drinks.

The caffeine in coffee and other drinks stimulates your adrenal glands to produce a hormone called adrenaline, causing an almost instant high.  This is the same reaction you get under stress, ie your adrenal glands kick in and produce a burst of energy followed by a drop in energy levels.  When the energy levels drop off, you feel the need for another energy surge so you go and have another coffee or perhaps some sugary foods and so it continues.

If you must have caffeinated coffee, limit yourself to one cup a day to avoid dependency.   Tea is a better option as it contains less caffeine.  Better still, herbal or fruit teas contain no caffeine.

If you are someone that needs a coffee to kick start you in the morning or give you an energy lift in the day, then you are most likely addicted to caffeine and should seek to reduce your caffeine levels.
