Get your breakfast right

You’ve heard it a million times before right?  “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”

Breakfast is key to getting your metabolism going in the morning.  However, if you are eating the wrong foods then it’s not helping as much as it could.  Avoid the usual cup of coffee and bowl of high sugar breakfast cereal.

The reason for this is firstly, the coffee is a stimulant (more on this later in the week) which provides you with a short term high.  Secondly, high sugar breakfast cereal  will raise your insulin levels, storing excess sugar initially as glycogen and then as fat.

It will provide you with a short term boost of energy which will leave you lacking energy later in the morning.  Because you lack energy you will opt for another high sugar energy boost and so the cycle continues.

Instead select a breakfast which will provide you with more sustained energy such as museli with nuts and seeds and natural yoghurt with a splash of dried fruit or better still fresh fruit or perhaps poached or boiled egg and wholemeal toast or a bowl of porridge spiced up with nuts, seeds, oat bran and some dried fruit (make a load up and store it).
