Why we having food cravings

Continuing on with the subject of food cravings, one of the key times that they hit is during the afternoon.  This happens because our blood glucose levels have fallen, which causes us to lack in energy so we crave something which is going to give us an energy boost.

In the winter, we often crave more carbohydrates to give us an energy boost.  We also crave food when we are stressed as many of us are programmed to link food with feeling good.  The problem is that the feeling only lasts as long as the chocolate bar or cake that you are eating.

Women also crave carbohydrates such as chocolate prior to or during their menstrual cycle.  This is partly because they burn more calories at this time so feel the need for an energy boost.  Also, it is suggested that women eat more sugary food during this time in an attempt to reduce the negative feelings of PMS by raising their serotonin levels (which make you feel better).

Food cravings

Food cravings are one of the key reasons why we battle the bulge.  Over 95% of women suffer from food cravings compared to approximately 68% of men.   Generally we crave a certain type of food such as chocolate or crisps (sweet or savoury).

Although we don’t plan our cravings they can be quite predictable, ie we have them at certain times of the day or month and in certain situations.Coming up….I’ll be talking about when we have cravings and provide you with some methods for combating them.

Tonight’s Boot Camp

What a great night for boot camp.  It’s great to see the progress you are all making.  We will soon have Jerbourg steps cracked.

For the record we ran a total of 1.8 miles on the cliffs tonight and we climbed 587 feet.

Check out these pictures

Here are some pictures of a personal training session with Andy Phillips.  It was a nice night so we did the session in his back garden.

Andy has done really well with his weight loss and much improved fitness.

Back to business as usual

Sorry I haven’t posted for a few days.  I have been in Jersey racing…….Crapaud-bashing!  Guernsey won the seniors, women’s and veterans inter-insular road races in cycling so was a good weekend for us.  Special mention to James McLaughlin for winning the road race for the second year in succession, to add to his time trial titles.

I shall see you boot campers on Tuesday at 6 pm at Jerbourg.  I hope you enjoyed your Saturday off as I will have to work you harder tomorrow to make up for it!!!

Tuesday’s Boot Camp

We will be at Jerbourg at 6 pm for boot camp.  Bring a drink with you and a good pair of legs!!!

Supersonic Salmon …another super food for you

Salmon and other oily fish contain omega 3 fats that reduce blood clotting, cholesterol levels and inflammation.  It significantly reduces the risk of heart disease and the likelihood of having a heart attack.  Salmon is low in saturated fat and in calories.

Perhaps not so well known for the benefits it brings to our eyesight, the omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids in salmon help to prevent macular degeneration of the eye, dryness and loss of vision.

Salmon is a source of quality protein and is packed full of vitamins and minerals.  It’s not only good for the body but good for the brain, improving memory.  It also helps to treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Boot Camp

There is no boot camp this Saturday so you will need to find your own entertainment and no Ali, that doesn’t mean a morning of coffee drinking!

We will be at Jerbourg on Tuesday at 6 pm to make some progression on those lovely steps at Jerbourg.  If you haven’t joined boot camp yet, come along on Tuesday.  Make sure you complete an informed consent form first.

More superfoods….Avocado

Avocados are high in a number of nutrients, including monounsaturated fat (a healthy fat), vitamins C, K and E, fibre, folic acid, calcium and potassium.  They contain more lutein than other fruits.  Lutein is an antioxidant which helps to prevent and treat prostate and breast cancers, protects from cataracts and helps to protect from heart disease.  These gems can also help to reduce cholesterol.

Avocados go great in salads so are perfect for this time of year.  Put them on top of rice cakes or spelt bread for a healthy snack also.
