Saturday’s Boot Camp

We will be at Fort Houmet on Saturday at 10 am - hope to see you there.

Remember to dress for the conditions (possibly sun screen) and don’t forget a drink.

Tonight’s Boot Camp

Well done to those that participated in tonight’s boot camp.  I promised some stats so here we go:

  • We ran for a total of 1.7 miles (on the cliffs)
  • The shorter running efforts were 0.16 of a mile and the longer one was 0.2 of a mile
  • In total we climbed  180 metres

It’s great to see you all getting fitter.  Now, we have a target to run all the way up Jerbourg steps and get that bottle of champers.

So what is it about salt?

We all hear it “don’t add salt to your meals” but do you know why?  The reason being that too much salt can increase your risk of high blood pressure which is linked to heart disease.

We should be consuming no more than 6g of salt per day.  However, most poeple are consuming over 9g per day.

Approximately 75% of our salt intake is consumed from processed foods.  So, what type of foods are we talking about?  The following have a high salt content:

  • Crisps and salted nuts
  • Takeaways
  • Sauces
  • Pate
  • Ready made soups
  • Stock cubes and gravy granules
  • Ham and bacon
  • Sausages

Food labels tend to list both salt and sodium content.  1g salt equals 0.4g sodium.

Aim to eat the minimum amount of processed foods as possible.  However, if you do eat ready made meals and sandwiches, aim for foods with under 0.5g sodium (1.25g salt).  For individual foods such as snacks and sauces, choose food which contains under 0.3g sodium (0.75g salt).
