Here’s what we did tonight on boot camp

Well done to tonight’s participants.  We have reached some new highs.  Here is the data:

We covered 2.15 miles (3.46 km) on the cliffs and climbed 749 ft (228 m) so a good improvement on last week.

Tonight’s Boot Camp

We will be at Jerbourg at 6 pm tonight.

On 14 July, we are going to have a meal out after boot camp.  If you can let me know whether you intend to come along to the meal that’ll be fab.

What Andy Phillips says about Bowditch Fitness and Nutrition

Below is an extract from a testimonial provided by Andy Phillips who has used my personal training and nutrition advice services.

“…… Ann plans each session to suit each individual,  giving constant support and encouragement.  What has kept me interested and enthusiastic is the variety in each session. So far, in 4 months I have lost nearly 2 stone not through dieting but through better nutrition and regular exercise.

I do still enjoy a good social life but, with Ann’s guidance, have balanced that with a healthy lifestyle.  I feel much better and people have started to notice, which is great. I can certainly recommend Ann to anyone wishing to improve their lifestyle in the way I have.”

Sugar is the root of all evil

Sugar is just a step away from fat.  Food labels can be confusing as they claim that a product is low in fat but what they don’t tell you , unless you can read between the lines on the label, is that it is most likely high in sugar.  Eating foods high in sugar causes your insulin levels to rise, your body then stores the excess sugar as glucose.  A while later, if you don’t burn off that glucose, it turns into fat.

When you see a product which claims to be low in fat, look at the food label.  Does it have lots of sugary carbohydrates?  If so, then it is high in sugar.

Sugar comes in many different names which can be confusing.  Here are some to look out for:

  • Maltose
  • Molasses
  • Syrups (corn, rice, golden)
  • Glucose
  • Sucrose
  • Honey
  • Lactose
  • Sorbitol
  • Rice extract
  • Malt and malt extract
  • Fructose
  • Mannitol

Strawberries

With Wimbledon on at the moment, it seemed appropriate to provide some data on the food we associate with that event….strawberries (without the cream of course!).

Strawberries are packed full of nutrients and are particularly high in Vitamin C and Potassium.  They also provide 9% of the recommended daily amount (RDA) of Folate, which is needed to produce red and white blood cells and for the production of haem - the iron content of haemoglobin.  Other key nutrients contained in strawberries are Vitamin A, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

Strawberries are tasty enough to eat on their own but if you are missing the cream, why not replace with yoghurt for a healthier option?

Tuesday’s Boot Camp

We will be at Jerbourg at 6 pm for Tuesday’s boot camp.  Don’t forget to bring a drink and a good pair of legs.

There is no getting around it….

If you want to lose weight or maintain your current weight then exercising is essential.

Convinced?

Additionally exercising has many health benefits, including reducing stress levels, lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease, lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and type II diabetes.

Convinced now?  I really hope so.

With regards to weight loss, exercising increases your metabolic rate which means you will start to burn more fuel (food) and use this for energy.  The better the quality of fuel that you consume, the easier it is for your body to burn that fuel as energy rather than store it as fat.

If you have not exercised for a long time and/or have health issues, I suggest you consult with your GP prior to commencing an exercise programme.

If in doubt on what is the best exercise to do then it is wise to consult a professional fitness instructor.

Today’s Boot Camp

Hi Folks

I think it is fair to say that boot camp reached another level today!! I always know it’s a good one when there is plenty of moaning and the moaning was off the scale today :-).    Ali was on top form (with the moaning) and was impressive catching the ball with her eyes shut, Claire and Becs tried to escape (well they say they got lost) and we have a new boot camp smart ar*e in the shape of Gordon which makes 2 of us.

In all seriousness though, it’s great to see your fitness levels improving.  Many of you said that you wouldn’t have persevered on your own and that’s what boot camp is all about, pushing you to new limits.

Island Games

Good luck to the Guernsey Island Games Team who will be competing in Aland over the forthcoming week.

Curb those cravings!

Here are some tips for keeping those cravings at bay or in the event that a craving strikes, how to deal with it:

  • Don’t keep stocked up with empty foods which provide limited or no nutritional benefit.  If the food you are craving is not in the cupboard you are likely to eat something else or nothing at all.
  • Be prepared for food cravings by having some healthy snacks at hand such as hummus and raw carrot or celery, oatcakes, fruit and nuts.

  • Ensure you have a varied diet.  By consuming the same or similar foods each day, you are likely to miss out on nutrients which will cause cravings.
  • Ensure you keep your energy levels stocked up by eating small meals throughout the day.  Importantly, start with a satisfying breakfast such as poached egg on wholemeal toast or porridge.
  • Consume from every major food category with each meal, ie protein, carbohydrates and fat.  Just a note on “fat”, this is often contained within the protein portion of your meal.  Also ensure you consume fibre as this has the ability to fill you up.
