Looking for strong core strength and tight abdominals?
You won’t get that six pack look unless you lean out, otherwise it will be covered by a layer of fat. Combined with being lean, you need ‘focussed’ abdominal work. Core strength is one of the key areas I have worked on for many years as a cyclist and I have enforced the importance of a strong core on those that I coach.
For anybody - whether sports competitor or someone that stays active for fun or to keep the weight off, a strong core will help to reduce the risk of injuries, especially back problems.
So, what should you be doing to improve that core strength? There is plenty, the likes of pilates and well performed abdominal crunches work well. Equipment wise invest in a medicine ball or swiss ball - there is a huge range of exercises you can do using these. The secret though is to conduct abdominal exercises on a frequent basis and with good form.
