Why do we emotionally eat?

Eating and emotion are so closely linked for many people.  Have you ever had a bad day at work and decided to binge on chocolate when you got home or got a Chinese takeaway just to make you feel better. 

So why do we binge eat?  This is because we are trying to transfer our thoughts away from the issue that is bothering us to something which is pleasant to us, ie food.  In our mind this takes us from pain to pleasure very quickly. 

Do you constantly think about food or concern yourself with how much you weigh?  This is because you are distracting yourself form thinking about the issues that are causing you concern.   

Have you ever felt hungry when you have not long finished a meal and are full?  This is because you are feeling empty about something so this is actually an “emotional” hunger as opposed to being physically hungry.
