90% of today’s children will be overweight or obese by 2050

That’s an interesting statistic and rather worrying.  I see overweight children more and more often nowadays on our little Island.   Part of the reason for this is that children are chauffeured door to door by their parents, they are less active and their diets contain more fat and are generally less healthy.  Surely parents have an obligation to give their children a healthy start in life.

Action needs to be taken to stop obesity in children and adults together with the risks which come with that such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, having a stroke, cancers and type II diabetes.  These are serious health issues and should not be taken lightly.  Not to mention the low self confidence and self esteem that comes with being overweight and obese.

The UK has launched a new healthy living campaign to tackle Britain’s obesity levels.    Interestingly, some of the manufacturers of products which contribute to obesity levels are backing the campaign.

So where do you start?  I would suggest leave the car at home occasionally, walk or cycle to the shops.  If you have to take your car, park it at the furthest point from where you are going. If you don’t normally exercise, then start today with a 10 minute walk to the point of being slightly out of breath, add a minute on to your walk time every day.

When you go shopping this week, don’t put the biscuits in your trolley, instead put some fruit.  If you have a sweet tooth, then put dates and figs in the trolley.

If you are unsure whether you should undertake exercise, please check with your GP first.
